Hanoi – Vietnamese police arrested a popular society blogger for describing the son of a senior police official as a womanizing drug user, state media reported Tuesday.

Blogger Le Nguyen Huong Tra was arrested October 23 for posting ‘inaccurate information,’ police were quoted as saying by online newspaper Vnexpress.

On October 14, Tra wrote that Nguyen Trong Khanh, son of Deputy Minister of Public Security Nguyen Khanh Toan, was romantically with several female celebrities.

She also reproduced a letter from another official denouncing Toan for giving his son a job at the ministry. The letter alleged that Khanh had a drug addiction.

The blog entry was quickly erased, but was archived in other sites around the internet.

The Vnexpress article said a police investigation had concluded the information was inaccurate and damaged reputations.

If found guilty, Tra could face up to seven years in prison.

Vietnam has imprisoned numerous bloggers in recent years, mainly for political offenses.

On Friday, Human Rights Watch called for the release of two political bloggers.

Phan Thanh Hai, a member of an independent journalists’ organization, was arrested on October 18.

Another member of the group, Nguyen Van Hai, was arrested in 2008 and sentenced to 30 months in prison on charges of tax evasion.

His sentence expired on October 20, but police said they are considering charging him with ‘spreading propaganda against the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.
